The long-awaited National Baha’i Convention took place at Amalika in Thyolo in 1970, Hand of the Cause of God, Paul Haney represented the Universal House of Justice. At the end of the Convention the delegates had elected their first ever National Spiritual Assembly comprising of two women and seven men namely: Brian Eames, Polan Eames, George Mpyaila, John Hanneck, Sydney Chikondenji, Joyce Liggit, Lamuka Mwaungulu, Donald Makonyola and Ramucy Namukopwe.
